About Dalmatians

01

Breed History

The Dalmatian is an ancient breed with a history as a coach dog, firehouse mascot, hunter, and loyal companion. Known for their distinctive spotted coat, they are poised, alert, and capable of great endurance combined with a fair amount of speed.

02

Temperament

Dals are delightful and intelligent companions — very affectionate, excellent family dogs if raised properly, clean in the house, with very little doggy odor, and generally quite easy to housetrain.

03

Colors & Markings

Dalmatians come in two color varieties: Black and White, and Liver and White. All Dalmatians are born white — their spots develop over the first few weeks of life and continue developing through adulthood.

04

Health Considerations

Responsible breeders screen for hereditary conditions including deafness (BAER testing), hip dysplasia, and urinary stones. Always ask breeders for health clearances before purchasing a puppy.

05

Breed Standard

The AKC breed standard describes the ideal Dalmatian as a distinctly spotted dog, well-balanced and muscular, capable of great endurance combined with a fair amount of speed.

06

Finding a Dalmatian

We encourage anyone looking for a Dalmatian to work with a responsible breeder who health tests their dogs, raises puppies in the home, and stands behind their breeding.
